Kalaratri - Day 7 of Navaratri

BY Indu Arora3 min read • October 16, 2026

Time is one of the biggest bondage and one of the biggest fears in humankind. When it is good, it becomes an attachment, and when it is unfavorable it is an aversion.

The day of Ma Kalaratri: Goddess of darkness transformed

Kala means the ultimate moment in time or the present moment. Ratri means night, but here it symbolizes the darkness that annihilates the duality of past and future.

Goddess Kalaratri is dark as the darkest of the nights and rises beyond any possible measure of strength to transcend time into timelessness. She rises from Ajna towards Sahasrara, transcending time and space. She is the slayer of all that is a limitation/obstacle on the path to timelessness.

Takeaway: Time is one of the biggest bondage and one of the biggest fears in humankind. When it is good, it becomes an attachment, and when it is unfavorable it is an aversion.

Devi Kalaratri guides us to become aware of the temporary nature of time and become free of any such bondages.

Practices to Invoke Kalaratri

Sankalpa: I live my life with meditative awareness, leaving no imprints of time and space on my karma.

Asana: Be mindful of the mindless moments in Yoga practices. Move in asana to understand the concept of space. Pace the breath in asana to understand the concept of time. The only reason we pace the movement with breath is to transcend the wheel of space and time.

Japa: Mentally recite the mantra "Om Dum Kalaratri Hreem Namaha"

Meditation: Meditate on the space in the center of the forehead, above the third eye center of consciousness in manas chakra.

Mudra: Kshepana Mudra (as in image) is the mudra of letting go, transcending the wheel of time—a mudra of ultimate freedom from the wheel of space and time (kala chakra).

Do not settle for anything less than Yoga in Yoga.
