Dharma

3 minutes

There is a lot of buzz about this word and a lot of people are trying hard to find their Dharma. Dharma is not just finding your profession...

It is more..

Meaning: The meaning of the word 'dharma' is one that upholds (Sanskrit: "way of righteousness", from dhri, "to sustain; carry, hold"). One that upholds the creation, society, progression, health and sustains peace.

In the words of a wise man,

"There is only one dharma and that is to keep the Bhumi (earth) and Deha (our body) healthy."

It is not protein shake kind of healthy or supplements kind of healthy, but true health in our tissues, emotions, mind and earth.

Are there many types of Dharma...the answer is Yes!

There are 4 types of Dharma

  1. Swa-Dharma: To live on the Principle of Righteousness, Holiness and of Unity by speaking the truth, non stealing, maintain health and peace of body and mind
  2. Varna Dharma: To live in alignment with your physical, genetic, socio-economic, mental and emotional capacity
  3. Ashrama Dharma: To live in alignment with your age, stage of life
  4. Sanatana Dharma: To support the health of the planet and its beings. To live a life on Yogic principles

When one lives a life based on the four above, they are protected by the divine force of nature (prakruti). Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitaha- Dharma protects those who protect it!

So how to know my Dharma?

Awareness of the four dharmas is a consequence of being connected to self on a constant and consistent basis.

Dharma is not equivalent to the subconscious desires, motives, passion and challlenges. Dharma arises from the higher intelligence.

According to the vedic texts:

  • Dharma Matebhyo Udgrata

Dharma arises from the pure intelligence!

  • Yato-bhyudaya nihsreyasa-siddhih sa dharmah.
That which leads to the attainment of prosperity in this world (Abhyudaya) and total cessation of pain and attainment of eternal bliss hereafter (Nihsreyasa) is Dharma.

Dharma brings peace and contentments to self and others. It is a natural instinct to be of purpose, to be helpful and to support goodness in self and others.

Living a life of dharma is living Yoga itself! It creates the grounds of inaction in action, freedom from karma and the vicious cycle of action and reaction. Dharma never harms anyone. It is only there to uphold.

May we be established in dharma.
May we continue to act in a way that is conducive to the health of earth, society and body.
May we be held by the dharma as we walk on the path of righteousness.
The good we desire for ourself, may we desire for others too. What we do not like others to do to us, may we not do that to others too.
