5 Myths of Yoga Nidra

It's important to address common misconceptions: Yoga Nidra is not Sleep Yoga, Nidra, Deep Rest, Sleeping Meditation, or Non-Sleep Deep Rest.

Yoga Nidra has gained widespread attention in recent years, sparking excitement among practitioners (and even podcasters!) worldwide.

While this recognition is affirming, it's important to address common misconceptions: Yoga Nidra is not Sleep Yoga, Nidra, Deep Rest, Sleeping Meditation, or Non-Sleep Deep Rest.

Here, I dispel 5 common myths about Yoga Nidra, so we can get to the heart of the practice.

Myth #1: Yoga Nidra is a sleep fix.

Yoga Nidra is NOT an antidote to insomnia or a practice to invoke sleep. In fact, sleep is the antithesis of Yoga Nidra. In ordinary sleep, the body rests and awareness collapses. In Yoga Nidra, the body relaxes like sleep but awareness is consciously kept awake.

Myth #2: Yoga Nidra is a “quick” break.

There is nothing quick about Yoga Nidra, neither a quick fix nor a quick break. Invoking this state takes time, patience, tapasya, and a lot of preparation.

Five-minute or 10-minute Yoga Nidra is a trend, not a truth. We are mixing up shavasana with Yoga Nidra, and Yoga Nidra with meditation. Just because the body is still and eyes closed doesn’t make them the same. We need clarity in concepts.

Myth #3: Yoga Nidra is NSDR.

Non-Sleep Deep Rest is not Yoga Nidra. It’s like calling Yoga NWDS—Non-Workout Deep Stretch.

Let us not take Yoga out of Yoga Nidra. It is not rest, sleep, or destressing. It is not self-hypnosis, a nap, lucid dreaming, or a short relaxation. Let us stop making up stuff in Yoga. Yoga is not an invention; it is a self-discovery.

Myth #4: Yoga Nidra is deep sleep.

We are forgetting the prefix “Yoga” here. It is not just the mirror translation of Nidra = sleep. We must not forget Yoga in Yoga Nidra.

Yoga Nidra is the continuity of alert and calm awareness in a deep-sleep state. It is not invoking, enjoying, and inviting deep sleep for the sake of deep sleep. If at all, it is Yogic awakening, not Yogic sleep.

Myth #5: Yoga Nidra is beneficial for all.

I don’t think anything generic is beneficial for all. We are mistaking Yoga Nidra for a magic wand and a universal remedy.

Yoga Nidra is not all bliss and cozy. It is a practice of courage to look into the eye of our eye and wake up—because we must, we can, and we should. The benefits of Yoga Nidra are not Yoga Nidra.

Here are 3 things that Yoga Nidra is:

  1. Yoga Nidra is sacred. In fact, it is the name of a Devi/Goddess in the ancient text of Devi Mahatmayam. Read more about the story of Yoga Nidra here.

  2. Yoga Nidra is a state of awareness in which one becomes a witness to the dissolution of a limited mind into consciousness.

  3. Yoga Nidra is a bridge between Dhyana (Meditation) and Samadhi. It glues the two together.

Remember, the goal of Yoga Nidra is yoga!
