The Mudra That Supports Digestion During Menopause

Seeking some digestive balance and relief? Meet Samana Mudra!

Perimenopause and menopause can bring on not-so-welcome changes in our digestion.

Decreasing amounts of estrogen and progesterone during menopause can slow down the process of food passing through the GI system, causing symptoms like constipation, flatulence and bloating.

In Ayurveda, these are signs of poor agni and aggravated vata dosha. In Yoga, we can consider them as imbalances of samana vata/prana/vayu.

Seeking some digestive balance and relief? Meet Samana Mudra!

Sama means balanced, homogeneous, similar. The vital energy prana in our body functions as Samana to support healthy digestion. In fact, Samana is the life force behind digestion and all that animates digestive system organs.

This mudra is for you if you are experiencing:

  1. Bloating, indigestion, or heaviness after meals
  2. Irregular bowels
  3. Variable appetite

How to practice Samana Mudra:

Practice the mudra before meals (in case of condition #3) and after meals (in case of condition #1 and #2) for 2-5 minutes, with one or both hands. Let the breath be.

Do this for 7 consecutive days,  and observe the shift in your appetite, digestion, and energy levels.
